Thanks for speaking so frankly about it Jeg! I am a grad student expecting to graduate next year. I started doing mocks recently and followed my own framework until literally everybody asked me to follow CIRCLES.
Quite enjoyed reading this. I am currently a consultant at one of the MBBs and I see so many similarities here with case prepping for interviews! A lot of candidates rely on frameworks without understanding that at a fundamental level a consultant just wants you to break down problems to first principle so that you can start devising various hypothesis to problem solve it.
I have recently launched my own newsletter called Decks and Diapers ( https://decksanddiapers.substack.com/ ) and was about to cover this topic (being too dependent on frameworks). Will share a link to your article too!
Yep! Candidates fall into the “checking boxes” trap often which can easily cloud what an interviewer is fundamentally looking for! I saw this phenomenon first in consulting interviews as a former consultant myself

jeg, nice article. One quick question - what are CUJs?
Critical user journeys! Here’s a great intro to what they are: https://www.reforge.com/brief/critical-user-journeys-how-google-product-teams-react-when-growth-slows#kAmzID4e8egZy40M77MXYw
This is really helpful! Thanks to my buddy Jor for mentioning as well. I shared on LinkedIn and I would ping you but I can't find you. Catch me at https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6691536482244677632/
